The Simpson Family of Athens, Ohio and Columbus, Ohio

Welcome to my genealogy page. My name is Nina Young-Bennett. The surnames I am researching are Simpson, Sloan, Roberts, and Cook

My maternal family name is SIMPSON. I have heard a lot of stories about the origin of the name. In our family, it is commonly accepted that the earliest known Simpson family member came to this country from Scotland. Simpsons have ended up all over the country. The group I stem from is scattered around Columbus, Ohio.

My Maternal Genealogy Line
My mother, Violet Young, is one of 12 children of Samuel Tiding Simpson and Edna Lou Simpson (nee: Roberts). Her siblings were Odell, Wilson, Samuel, Bert, Edna Mae, James, Charles, Roosevelt (all deceased); and John, Ralph, Donald, and Daisy Marie. My maternal grandfather was born 1/1/1898, although we are uncertain as to which state. Some say Georgia, while others say it was the Carolinas. He died in Ohio when I was under a year old. I did know his sister, my great-aunt Violet. Many times, she told me the story of how their mother, Alice Sloan, died at a young age. Having several young children to raise, my great-grandfather, William Tiding Simpson, sent to Missouri for a mail order bride. Although they had no children together, she lovingly raised my grandfather and his siblings. Ultimately, William moved the family from Athens, Ohio to the "Hilltop" area of Columbus, Ohio. The siblings were Charles, Pansy, Daisy, Bert, Violet, and Roosevelt. It is believed that only my grandfather; his brother, Bert; and sister, Violet, lived to adulthood. My maternal grandmother, Edna Lou Roberts, was one of four children of Emma Lou Cook and Albert (??) Roberts. The other children were brothers Otis and Luther; and sister, Cornelia. Although I have no information on the Roberts side of the family, I do know that Emma Lou Cook, my great-grandmother, was one of 12 children (Mary, Ida, Harry, Mahalia, Lizzie, Shepard, Katie, Anna, Martha, Frank, and Lewis) of Samuel Cook and Nancy English Cook of Cave Springs, Georgia. I would like to make contact with some of Nancy and Samuel's other descendants, perhaps those still residing in Georgia.
